120th Avenue Connection Project - Broomfield, Colorado

The 120th Connection Avenue Connection Project is one of the first CDOT design build projects for a medium sized construction project. The project is located in Broomfield, Colorado and involves the extension of 120th Avenue (State Highway 128) from Wadsworth Parkway (SH 121) east over US 36 to Old Wadsworth Boulevard. The project includes using a sustainability approach in the design and construction of the roadways. The approach includes the following actions:

• Water conservation- Landscaping will use vegetation (grass, shrubs and trees) that require a minimum amount of water for long term maintenance. Non vegetative medians will be used that reduce the amount of landscape maintenance and mowing. This approach will save water and costly landscape maintenance.

• Material Reuse and Recycling- Waste transportation and landfilling costs are expensive and impact the environment. Institute a waste minimization program that will reduce waste generation and promote material recycling and reuse.

• Energy Conservation- Design and construction practices that will be both short and long term energy efficient. Fuel consumption will be minimized by reducing idling times and vehicle transport of materials to landfills, efficient fleet transportation and managed vendor transportation of materials.

• Natural Resource Conservation- Institute environmental avoidance, minimization, mitigation and enhancement. Keeps the project footprint as small as possible, thus reducing the amount of impervious area, heat island effect, erosion and vegetative impacts.
